Hand Stripping
Hand stripping is an ancient grooming practice used to maintain the proper coat texture of many wire, harsh and flat coated breeds. It is the process of removing dead hair from the coat of non-shedding breeds. Historically, It was an important grooming technique as many of these breeds needed their thick harsh coat maintained to protect their skin whilst they had busy outdoor working lives.
Today, it is not necessary to maintain this correct coat texture, and the majority of these breeds are clipped resulting in a softer coat. However, many dog owners still choose to keep their pets hand stripped to keep the correct coat texture, and a hand stripped coat will always be rich and brilliant in colour.
Today, hand stripping is most commonly done on terriers (wire coats) and gun dogs (silky coats) using a combination of tools (stipping knives, stripping stones, banded combs) as well as finger and thumb plucking. If done correctly, on the correct coat type, then the process of hand stripping is not uncomfortable for the dog.
